Serena Berne, LMSW
Therapist
I believe that the foundation of successful treatment is trust. To facilitate that I provide a safe, nonjudgmental, open environment to partner and build that trust with my clients. Therapy creates a space for people to be seen, heard and be their authentic selves. It can be a way of showing up for yourself and exploring parts that may not feel safe to express in other areas of your life.
I approach therapy with curiosity, respect, collaboration, empathy, humor and creativity. I welcome people of all backgrounds and identities. Areas I work with include: Anxiety, Stress, Depression, Self Esteem issues, Trauma, Shame, Life and Career Transitions, feelings of Overwhelm and being Stuck, Relationships, Perimenopause and Menopause. I have particular experience working with performing artists and those in other creative fields. I also have experience working with individuals caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
My approach is psychodynamic (exploring your inner world and looking at how it impacts your daily life), relational and trauma informed. I blend mindfulness techniques, narrative therapy and other methods. Therapy is collaborative so it will be tailored to each person’s specific needs for growth and change. I hold a Master’s degree in Clinical Social Work from Smith College and a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University. My social work includes training and working at The Training Institute for Mental Health as well as over three years at the 92nd Street Y working with seniors with dementia and their caregivers. Before becoming a therapist I was a professional artist and teaching artist.
I offer a free 15-minute consultation to see if we might be a good fit. If not, I am happy to refer you to another member of our practice who may be. I look forward to meeting you.
